The Gendarmerie Nationale uses 3D printing to solve crimes!

VOLUMIC is very proud, as a French manufacturer, to equip national protection and defense services. Today, different poles of the gendarmerie are using 3D printing to help them innovate in their work! Every day, the laboratories of the Institut de Recherche Criminelle de la Gendarmerie Nationale (IRCGN) develop innovative devices to save precious time during DNA analysis.

The DCBG (Division Criminalistique Biologie Génétique) now has a complete genetic analysis platform that allows the identification of suspects in various criminal cases. Our French experts from the PJGN (Pôle Judiciaire de la Gendarmerie Nationale) also use these 3D printed tools in the field with a mobile lab they created to increase their productivity.

“3D printing at the service of the gendarmerie

3D printing is not only used to print gadgets for individuals and to design prototypes in companies. The Pôle Judiciaire de la Gendarmerie Nationale (PJGN) brings together experts in forensics and artificial intelligence to solve complex legal cases. The 600 people who work there have the nickname “Les Experts”, in reference to the television series.

The PJGN’s field of action is wide but specialized: cybercrime, video protection, document fraud, improvised explosive devices, protection of safe houses, intervention in contaminated environments, marking products for property protection, etc.

At the cutting edge of technology in the field of DNA identification, the Institut de Recherche Criminelle de la Gendarmerie Nationale (IRCGN) is equipped with a complete DNA analysis platform entrusted to the biologists of the Division Criminalistique Biologie Génétique (DCBG). Nuclear DNA typing, also known as “genetic fingerprinting”, allows the identification of individuals implicated in criminal cases.

3D printing helps forensics

In order to save precious time during genetic analysis, the use of 3D printing has made it possible to design and create in-house risers for the use of different models of analysis plates. This was done with a 3D printer Volumic Stream 20 Pro MK2.

The Pôle Judiciaire de la Gendarmerie Nationale is located in Pontoise (Val-d’Oise) and hosts the DNA laboratory which is itself located within the IRCGN. As a world innovation, the institute even has a mobile laboratory to carry out analyses at crime scenes or natural disasters.

The unpacking, calibration and first start-up of the Volumic Stream 20 Pro MK2 3D printer was completed in half a day and the first parts were released after 24 hours. The main material used is PLA because it represents the best cost / ease of printing / mechanical resistance ratio. Other prints are made in PETG and TPU.

Thanks to this, height adjustments are no longer necessary at each plate change. More globally, the possibilities of rapid prototyping allow to design and develop innovative tools and devices within the IRCGN laboratories. Internalizing 3D design and 3D printing within the gendarmerie, without having to call on a subcontractor or external service provider, contributes to improving productivity, quality, results and ergonomics for the criminal research institute’s experts. “
